SINGAPORE: John Soh Chee Wen, the alleged mastermind of the October 2013 penny stock saga, has been accused of seven new charges of witness tampering. Court yesterday denied bail for Soh, who now faces a total of 188 charges. The Malaysian businessman has been held in remand since Nov 24 last year.
Under the latest charges, Soh is accused of asking three witnesses to deny knowledge of dealings and transactions when they were questioned by the Criminal Affairs Department (CAD).
The three witnesses are Gabriel Gan, known as a broker with DMG & Partners; Ken Tai, of Algo Capital; and Peter Chen, a senior executive with LionGold Corp. Together with Blumont Group and Asiasons Capital, LionGold is one of the three penny stocks at the centre of the saga. Asiasons Capital has since been renamed Attilan Group.
After hearing from both the prosecution and Soh’s counsel, district judge Terence Tay called Soh the “protagonist” of this case. The judge added that Soh has “sufficient influence over the supporting cast”.
Others involved in the case include Soh’s girlfriend and alleged co-mastermind, Quah Su Ling, who faces 178 charges of her own for her role in the saga.
Quah, who is out on bail, had earlier wanted to visit Soh but was not allowed to. The court yesterday granted Soh’s request to give Quah a call. The third person charged thus far in this case, Goh Hin Calm, faces six charges, largely for helping Soh and Quah with their transactions.
Soh’s lawyer, Tan Chee Meng of WongPartnership, said his client is willing to accept any bail condition, so they can be better prepared for his trial.
Tan said that Soh tried asking for space while in detention to store the necessary documents. The lawyer reported that prison authorities had retorted: “This is not a hotel.”
Tan also pointed out the seven new charges of witness tampering were made known to him less than two hours before the hearing began yesterday afternoon. “I was not able to take timely instructions from my client,” he said.
Tan stressed the need for Soh to not face such “prejudice” in the legal process. “Let’s not say John Soh was convicted because he was stifled in his defence,” he said.
The prosecutors, led by deputy public prosecutor Teo Guan Siew, argued that Soh is a flight risk. Prosecutors said Soh had previously used an Indonesian passport under the name of Didi Supardi to travel in and out of Singapore.

（吉隆坡27日讯）科恩马集团（KNM，7164，主板工业产品组）意外陷入亏损，股价应声下挫，分析员看淡发展前景，纷纷下调财测。
其中，马银行研究更大砍2017和2018财政年盈利预测32%和29%，丰隆研究也下修17.5%和18.5%，并调低评级至“卖出”。
受到业绩亏损拖累，科恩马股价下滑12.68%或4.5仙，以31仙挂收。
丰隆研究指出，科恩马受到亚洲及大洋洲业务表现不济所拖累，2016年末季亏损1亿1170万令吉，全年累计亏损9900万令吉，逊于该行预期的获利2300万令吉及市场预测的盈利2600万令吉。
亚洲及大洋洲表现疲弱，主要是因为关丹业务面对亏损及超乎预料的高运输费。
此外，加拿大油砂活动剧减，造成该公司美国业务蒙受亏损，也是主要原因之一。
丰隆表示，亚洲及大洋洲业务料可在2017财政年复苏，在科恩马因为特别项目完成，而没有增加运输费用的情况下，有望达到收支平衡。

全年净亏17亿
合顺全年净亏也扩至16亿9057万6000令吉，比较前期净亏为3717万1000令吉。
第四季营业额跌26.78%，至30亿6231万1000令吉，全年营业额下跌24.07%，至109亿6506万8000令吉。
该公司在初步报告中指出，随着油气业领域在2014年中开始受到油价下跌沉重冲击，该公司于2016年全年为上市油气业务提供7亿8000万令吉资产减值及非上市油气资产作出3亿8200万令吉资产减值，为冲击全年业绩表现主因。该公司也预期2017年汽车业务仍具挑战。
另一方面，积极整合的合顺油气（UMWOG，5243，主板贸服组），由于资产减值损失增加，截至2016年12月31日第四季亏损扩大，净亏9亿1842万9000令吉，导致全年净亏11亿8618万4000令吉。

I bought for Best Western Dua Sentral and then they closed shop and disappeared. Then recently they called from Best Western in Genting trying to sell the same membership again. What a CROC!!

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 23): Tune Protect Group Bhd's net profit fell 30% to RM16.54 million in its fourth quarter ended Dec 31, 2016 (4QFY16) from RM23.49 million a year earlier, as the insurer registered lower net earned premiums and higher claims.
Tune Protect told Bursa Malaysia today higher expenses also led to the profit drop. Revenue was higher at RM135.47 million compared to RM130.92 million.
The company said the revenue rise was "due mainly to the improvement in gross earned premiums of motor, engineering and medical classes in general insurance segment".
According to Tune Protect's income statement, 4QFY16 net earned premiums fell to RM84.75 million from RM86.02 million. Net claims rose to RM37.12 million from RM30.78 million.
Tune Protect said full-year net profit rose to RM79.98 million from RM68.97 million a year earlier. Revenue climbed to RM516.62 million from RM480.19 million.
AXIATA--BIG LOSSES
Flash: Axiata 4Q net loss at RM309m vs RM467m net profit a year earlier
KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 23): Axiata Group Bhd reported a fourth quarter net loss of RM309.5 million versus a net profit of RM467.24 million a year earlier, due mainly to a signficant increase in foreign exchange (forex) loss and net financing cost.
Axiata told Bursa Malaysia today its revenue grew to RM5.79 billion, from RM5.36 billion on higher income from Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Cambodia operations.
Axiata's income statement showed net finance cost rose to RM900.11 million, from RM175.13 million. Included in the net finance cost was a net forex loss on financing at RM556.69 million, versus a gain of RM90.83 million.
For the full year, Axiata said net profit shrank to RM504.25 million, from RM2.55 billion a year earlier, while revenue grew to RM21.57 billion, from RM19.88 billion.
The group proposed a final dividend of three sen per share, which brings full-year dividends to eight sen.
