shocked and disgusted that the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Seri Khalid Abu Bakar, has not taken any action against the groups of ‘butt exercise protesters’ and ‘burger stall protesters’ who conducted lewd, threatening and inexplicable activities outside the home of Bersih Co-Chairperson Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan over the past few days.
I am shocked and disgusted that the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Seri Khalid Abu Bakar, has not taken any action against the groups of ‘butt exercise protesters’ and ‘burger stall protesters’ who conducted lewd, threatening and inexplicable activities outside the home of Bersih Co-Chairperson Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan over the past few days.
These series of acts and operating a row of food stalls outside a residential home, is criminal intimidation. The police must not ignore such acts and just claim that it is trivial and conclude that it does not amount to an offence.
Such acts, are of “threat” and “sexual harassment” in nature under Section 506 and 509 of the Penal Code, should be condemned and acted on to protect the sanctity of one’s home and further discourage the intimidation of Datuk Ambiga and her family. These acts not only disrupt the peace of her home but also insult Ambiga’s dignity.
I call on Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, as the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, to chastise the protestors for these inappropriate acts and the police for their inaction.
The silence and procrastination from the government to do so would only give credence to the perception that these ‘protest acts’, by the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVTM) and petty traders group Ikhlas, are State-sponsored harassment programmes.
It has been reported that Ikhlas has promised to conduct a bigger demonstration outside Ambiga’s house on May 24th. Does this not amount to a threat to the safety of Ambiga and her family?
I urge Najib to instruct the police to investigate the matter and prevent further acts of disorder and intimidation against Ambiga and any other Bersih leaders .
